At Your Right Hand (Part One)

Title:  At Your Right Hand
Scripture:  Zech.3:1

Happy New Year “Fan” – tastic Passengers,

This new year I would like to encourage you in this truth from God’s Word, that, even though Satan may stand at your right hand to resist you in fulfilling God’s purposes for your life, Scripture lets us know that, “we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous”, who also, “…shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul” (Psa.109:31).

In Zechariah 3:1 the scene displays a judicial character as Joshua, the High-Priest of the restoration who returned to Jerusalem, in the first group with Zerubbabel, from Babylonian exile was accused by Satan, “…standing at his right hand to resist him” (Ezra 3:2; 5:2; Hag.1;1; Zech.3:1).  It is also interesting to note that, under the law, the right side, is the place of accusation (Psa.109:6).

Here in God’s ‘Divine Tribunal’ (Courtroom) the malicious adversary stands in the presence of the Lord to proclaim Israel’s sins and their unworthiness of God’s favour. The “accuser” stood at his right hand to resist him, signifying that the hindrances and opposition to the temple rebuilding, after Israel’s return from Babylonian exile were really coming from Satan.

Nevertheless, the situation is crucial!  If Joshua is vindicated, Israel is accepted.  Nevertheless, if Joshua is rejected, Israel is also rejected. The entire plan of God for the nation was revealed in the outcome. Israel’s hopes would either be destroyed or confirmed.

Definition

Resist – As per Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, to resist someone means to: “exert or to set oneself against someone or something, in order to, counteract, prevent or defeat” the intended purpose of whatever it is that person is mandate to accomplish.

Accuser

Today, in opposition to the Church of Jesus Christ, carrying out God’s mandate on earth, Scripture says Satan is, “…your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Pet.5:8).  Furthermore, Scripture calls Satan who seeks to take advantage of the people of God the, “…accuser of our brethren…, which accused them before our God day and night” (Job 1, 2; Rev.12:10). Notwithstanding, the Church of Jesus Christ must triumph over Satan as they, “resist” him by being steadfast in the faith (1 Pet.5:9).

Advocate

Despite Satan’s opposition to the Church of Jesus Christ, we thank God, that we have someone on our side, who is greater than Satan, to speak in our defense, when we are accused (Psa.118:6; 124).  Scripture introduces Him this way, by saying that we also “have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2:1).

Consequently, as used in 1 John 2:1 the term “Advocate” denotes Jesus Christ, the Righteous, is our continuing Advocate with the Father, through His intercessory prayer because we who are sinful find in Him, the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and therefore, have our acceptance with God the Father (Heb.7:25).

God’s Courtroom

In Psalm 109:31 David’s praise for the Divine Magistrate was based on his confidence in the compassion and mercy of the Judge (Psa.109:31).  David’s case which was tried in God’s Courtroom and its outcome can be found in 2 Samuel 22 and Psalm 18.

The Lord was a present help to David in his challenging circumstances.  As His servant was accused, the Lord; stood at David’s right hand as his Advocate to plead his cause against his accusers and, “to save him from those that condemn his soul” and would execute their sentence if they could (Psa.35:1; 109:31).

God was David’s protector in his suffering.  Therefore, the Psalmist could boldly testify, “I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved” (Psa.16:8).  The Lord saved the soul of His servant in whom He delighted from those that pretended to be the judges of it.

You and I may suffer according to the will of God and stand accused many times in our lives on earth, as our adversary Satan, stands at our right hand to condemn us with shame and guilt of our past; along with feelings of unworthiness, so that he may hinder us from fulfilling our God-given purpose and calling.  Nevertheless, we have our Advocate, Jesus Christ the Righteous, who speaks on our behalf, to God the Father and Magistrate (1 John 2:1).  Jesus Christ defends us on the basis of His atonement and by His mercy causes us to WIN the case every time!

Let us be encouraged with the words of the Apostle Peter which says, “Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator” (1 Pet.4:19). Finally, Satan will stand “At Your Right Hand” to resist you in fulfilling your God-given mandate.  Nevertheless, you must move forward in the calling of God on your life, as you also,  “resist” him by being steadfast in the faith (1 Pet.5:9).
