Why did Jesus have to Die?

Scriptures:  Num.21:4-9; John 3:1-16; Acts 4:27-28; Rom.5:12

Greetings “Fan”-tastic Passengers,

Throughout the ages and for lack of understanding of the importance of the cross, many individuals have been misled by a very deceptive message of Satan, which says that, salvation by faith in Jesus’ finished work at Calvary, is not enough for them to be rescued from sin.  We know that God loves everyone, but this wonderful truth has been twisted to mean that, He would never limit His grace, by claiming that His Son Jesus Christ, is the only way for mankind to be saved. This is why so many falsely believe that if they are, “good” people, who believe in God and ask Him for forgiveness, they will go to Heaven. While this message sounds comforting, no amount of human goodness can suffice, to rescue mankind from his sinful state, into which he has fallen.  Ultimately, the Word of God, clearly explains who Jesus Christ is, why He had to die, and why every mortal being, must humbly repent of their sins, accept Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord of their life, in order to be reconciled to God.

In the Old Testament Scriptures, in Numbers 21:4-9 the story of the rebellious Israelites, who murmured and complained against God in the wilderness is recorded.  As a result of the people’s murmuring and complaining, God sent fiery serpents into their midst to punish them.
In order heal the people from the effects of the serpents venom, God told Moses to put a bronze serpent on a pole, with the promise that whoever looked at it would live.

So, why did Jesus have to die?

Jesus’ death was essential in God’s plan of salvation

Scripture in John 3:14-15 tells us that, when Jesus spoke to Nicodemus regarding His crucifixion, He said:  And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:  That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.” We see then, that the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on the cross, was the keystone of God’s eternal plan to save His people (Acts 4:27-28).

The Lord’s justice requires payment for sin

When God created Adam and Eve, He gave them the ability to choose obedience.  Nevertheless, when they decided to violate His instructions, sin entered into the world.  As a result of their disobedience to God, physical, spiritual and eternal death, was passed upon the entire human race.  Scripture in Romans 5:12 best explains this phenomenon as it says:  “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”

Because the Lord is just, He must do what is right.  Therefore, He declared what would happen if Adam and Eve, chose to disobey Him.  God said:  “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die” (Gen.2:16-17; 3:1-3).

Since then, every person who ever lived on planet earth, except Jesus Christ, has sinned and is worthy of the punishment of eternal separation from God because the Scripture says that:  “…all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23).

Now, if God were to offer forgiveness to humanity, without enforcing punishment, He would have gone against His Word and His very nature.  Therefore, in order for Him to remain just, the penalty for sin had to be paid (Rom.3:23-26; 5:1, 8-9; 6:23; 8:6-10).  Ultimately, Scripture in Matthew 20:28 says:  Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

Justification is only possible through the precious blood of Jesus Christ

There is only one way the Lord could both remain just, while He simultaneously rescues mankind from the punishment of our sins, which we deserve.  God’s Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ had to come to earth as the God-man, live a perfect life, and die in our place, on the cross at Calvary, in order to pay the full price for our sins.  Only then could He justify and declare us to be “no longer guilty.” Therefore, our salvation has nothing to do with our good works or worthiness.  Instead, it is all based on what Jesus did, at Calvary that we are: “now justified by His blood” (Rom. 5:8-9).

Our forgiveness is purchased by the shed blood of Jesus Christ

The precious blood of Jesus Christ, purchased mankind’s forgiveness, not merely to free us from the fear of judgment, but to qualify us to worship before God in a way that brings Him pleasure.  No one else could have purchased our salvation and saved us from God’s wrath because everyone else’s blood is tainted with sin. But Jesus Christ, the pure, spotless Lamb of God, through His blood and by the eternal Spirit:  “…offered himself without spot to God” and purge our conscience from dead works to serve the living God (Heb.9:14; 1 Pet.1:18-19).

Jesus is our substitute

Because the Lord is just and cannot overlook sin, we can either bear the punishment ourselves or rely upon God’s appointed substitute. Since Jesus Christ was the only person who ever lived a perfect life, He was the only one whose death could pay the penalty for the entire world. When He hung on the cross, God placed all the sins of mankind upon Him, past, present, and future and Jesus bore God’s divine judgment in our place (1 Peter 2:24). Now, all who believe this and trust Jesus Christ for salvation are forgiven.

It is finished

The worst ordeal, that of bearing in the place of humanity, on the cross, the wrath of God against sin, was over; when at about the ninth hour, after:  “…Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost” (Matt.27:46; Mark 15:34; John 19:30).  It is only pride which causes us human beings, to think that, we can add anything to what Jesus did on the cross for us, with our good works. Of a truth, we serve God to express our love and thanksgiving for His grace and mercy, but works could never suffice to save us.
In conclusion, God’s plan of salvation for humanity is truly amazing.  Faith is all that is required of us. When we acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who died in our place and accept Him as our substitute, the Lord forgives us.  Consequently, we enter into a relationship with Him, where Jesus Christ, our Good Shepherd says:  “I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.  As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep” (John 10:14-15).  His Holy Spirit also comes to live within us; He writes our names in the Lamb’s Book of Life; and Heaven becomes our home.

Thanks be to God, that we will never have to worry whether or not we are good enough, because our eternal security has been forever guaranteed by Christ’s perfect life, which He gave as payment for our debt of sins and His sacrificial death on the cross, on our behalf.  Indeed, this clearly answers the question, “Why did Jesus have to die?”
