Be Strong and Courageous

Scripture:  Joshua 1:1-18

Greetings “Fan”-tastic Passengers,

After the death of Moses, God puts His honour upon Joshua to lead His people into the Promised Land of Canaan.  Consequently, Joshua now finds himself the leader of a group of people, who were well known for murmuring, complaining, backsliding and for the most part, wishing they were back where they came from-Egyptian bondage.  Nonetheless, Moses had died, and there were still lots of work left to be done, such as, that of defeating and dislodging the inhabitants of giants, who lived in the Promised Land.

The intriguing questions now are being asked.  How will Joshua manage to do this? What does Joshua need in order to fulfil this breath-taking task?

Well, Joshua had the same thing as did Moses because God had also ordained Joshua to do His work.  Friends, when God ordains you to do His work, He also, gives you what is needed to accomplish the task at hand.  In addition, as He asked of Joshua, to be, “strong and courageous” He is asking the same of us today, who are called according to His purpose, to be “strong and courageous,” by:

Standing on God’s Promises
  • Now that God’s servant Moses, was dead, this situation, in a sense, made way for Joshua, and also prepared the people for what was to be done by him
  • Joshua was to: “…arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel”
  • This was a trial to the faith of Joshua, whether he would give orders to make preparation for passing the river when there was no visible way of getting over it, at least not at this place and at this time
  • He had no bridge or boats by which to convey the people over, therefore, he must believe that God, who had ordered them to go over, would somehow open a way for them
  • If Joshua is to be “strong, and courageous” he must stand upon the promises of the word of God
  • The same applies to you today. If you are to accomplish what God call, and instructs you to do, you as well must stand on His promises
Knowing God’s Presence is with you
  • Moses, when he has done his work as a servant, dies and goes to, “rest from his labours, and enters into the joy of his Lord.”Therefore, God chooses Joshua, his minister, who must now arise to finish what Moses began
  • To be fitted for this work, Joshua was to be, “strong and courageous” because there were giants in the Promised Land, who, with the power and presence of the Lord with him, he must go in and dislodge them
  • Nevertheless, there is one visible problem. The people of God, including Joshua, were no match, when it comes to size and strength, compared to the giants who were in the Land of Canaan
  • Notwithstanding, the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Joshua and our God, is by no means intimidated by giants. Therefore, you should not be intimidated by giants either. Consequently, God will not allow His people who trust in Him to be slain by giants
  • Therefore, Scripture in Psalm 124 explains that, “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us: then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us: then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul: then the proud waters had gone over our soul”
  • To the natural feeble man, going to do battle with giants seems to be a terrifying and impossible feat.Nevertheless, with the Powerful God of the Armies, who was with Moses at the Red Sea, and who also was with Joshua, by your side, you can, slay the giants and claim your Promised Land
  • There is no need to fear them, neither to be dismayed, as the Lord faithfully promised that: “I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”  Therefore, you must be, “strong and courageous” and move forward because, the same grace which was sufficient for the patriarchs and saints, who have conquered and gone on before you, is now available to you, to accomplish the task, which God has commissioned you to do
  • The Lord thy God is with thee” as a God of power. Those who go where God sends them will have His power with them, in order to make them prosperous. For example, God was with Joseph, throughout all of the harsh things, which he went through and showed him mercy, favour and made him prosperous, even in the midst of his captivity (Gen.39:2, 21). The presence of God will never be withdrawn from you, as He promises that: “I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee
  • Scripture in Hebrews 13:5 also says: “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee
  •  Furthermore, Jesus Christ, as He commissioned His disciples, to go to all the nations of the world and feed the hungry souls, in Matthew 28:19-20 said to them:  “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.” Amen
  • Consequently, because of God’s divine presence which is with you, you will experience, victory over all of your, “gigantic” enemies, even as little David, battled with and prevailed over the Philistine’s giant, Goliath, with a sling and a stone (1 Sam.17:50)
  • Do not fear because the God of power and might is on your side, therefore:There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life”
  • God will fight for you and cause your enemy, who, even though he was much bigger and more powerful than you, to become afraid and flee from before your face
Despite the Challenges, Stay the Path
  • If Joshua was to be “strong, and courageous” he must
  • Joshua was not to turn from it to the right hand or to the left
  • Adhering the law of God brings prosperity to your life. That is, you are able to win battles, see dreams and visions accomplished etc.Nevertheless, while compromising and turning away from the law of God, it only brings defeat in one’s life
  • God sees and blesses your faithfulness
  • Therefore, no matter if keeping on God’s path means losing your best friend, it is better to remain faithful to God’s call on your life, than to compromise your stand in righteousness
Step out by Faith and Start the Process
  • It is important that you act by faith, on what God has spoken to your heart
  • In Joshua’s situation, he believed the what God had spoken to his heart, which is what prompted him to start the process
  • Therefore, He began his journey of bravery, and courage by organizing, giving instructions and preparing the people to move forward
It is imperative for believers today, to be like Joshua, and start moving forward, into accomplishing what God has spoken to your heart.  You must, therefore, be, “strong and courageous” and as, God’s, “giant slayer” arise, put faith into action and claim your Promised Land.

Stay strong!  Stay encouraged!
