Let your Bow Abide in Strength

Scriptures:  Gen.49:23-24; Psa.45:7

Greetings “Fan”-tastic Passengers,

In Genesis 49:23-24 Scripture gives us a prophecy from the patriarch Jacob, prior to his death, concerning his son Joseph, which reminded Joseph of the difficulties and fiery darts of temptations, which he had formerly struggled through. During Joseph’s, season of fiery trials, his faith in God, was severely tested, yet it did not fail, as, the Scripture said that, “his bow abode in strength.” By God’s strength, Joseph bore all his excessive burdens with steadfastness, and did not do anything unrighteous or displeasing to the Lord. As the Josephs of God, in the world today, believers in Christ can find the strength for resisting temptations, and bearing afflictions, as you let your bow abide in strength in the Lord.

Scriptures in Genesis 37-50 tells the interesting story of Joseph, the eleventh son of the patriarch Jacob, how he was hated by his other ten brothers because of his father’s special love for him.  In addition, the brothers were also angry at Joseph because of his dreams in which God communicated to him, regarding his future and the future of his family. Therefore, they even went one step further with their bullying and began to label Joseph, “dreamer.” Eventually, one day, the brothers conspired against Joseph, as he came to bring them provision, out in the fields, and so they moved by the motivation of the slippery, green-eyed monster, called envy and stripped him of his robe and threw him in a waterless pit, before selling him as a slave to traders passing by.   Ultimately, for many years to follow, Joseph endured much hurt, pain and unprovoked suffering at the cruel hands of his ten brothers.

The enemies of Joseph, as described by their father Jacob, were archers, who had bows and arrows. Consequently, Jacob prophesied saying: “the archers have sorely grieved him, shot at him and hated him.” While the brothers of Joseph did not hurt him with a typical bow and arrow, their archer type, brutal attack on his heart was, nonetheless, damaging.

What then was their deadly weapon of archery?

It was their deceitful and desperately wicked heart, which was combined with their unruly, evil tongue, which is full of deadly poison. This deadly fusion of the heart and the tongue formed a devastating type of spiritual missile. Therefore, as the words were spoken against Joseph, they were given life and were projected at Joseph by his own brothers, until they, “sorely grieve him, shot at him and hated him”(Gen.49:23-24; Prov.18:21; Jer.17:9; James 3:6).

Everyone in the human race was born with this bow, a weapon of mass destruction, I call it. Even Joseph also had a bow and arrow, which he could have used to retaliate against the archers.  Nevertheless, because of Joseph’s, “love for righteousness and his hate for wickedness,” God’s Holy Spirit anointed his life, and as he surrendered his bow to the Mighty God of Jacob, “his bow abode in strength.”

Why was Joseph’s bow able to abide in strength?

Scripture tells us that it was, “the hands of the Mighty God of Jacob,” which strengthened the arms of Joseph’s hands, such that he was able to resist the force of the archers. Supernaturally, God also sanctified and transformed Joseph’s original bow, which comprised of his real human heart and tongue, which were both corrupted by sin, into a bow and arrow of a different sort. His bow and arrow was now, the virtues and graces that he was possessed of, such as innocence and integrity, chastity, fortitude, wisdom, prudence and patience, faith, hope, which God strengthened and cause to remain unmoved, and in their full exercise, notwithstanding the powerful attack of the archers, which was made upon them.

Like Joseph, believers in Christ have their strength, as well as their righteousness in and from Christ.  Therefore, when you face challenging situations in life, by the strength of the Lord, you too can, “let your bow abide in strength,” by surrendering it to God (Rom.12:1-3). It is God, who will sanctify and empower you by His Holy Spirit to: “Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom.6:11). All the Joseph’s of the Lord have their strength, as well as their righteousness, in and from Christ; and when they are weak in themselves, they are strong in him, to exercise grace and perform duty. So, before you think of firing back at the wicked archers, remember, to, let your bow abide in strength.

Stay strong!  Stay encouraged!
