The Veil was Torn

Scriptures:  Heb.9:1-9, 10:19-20

Greetings 'Fan'-tastic Passengers,

The holy temple which existed in Jerusalem was the center of Jewish religious life. The temple was the place where animal sacrifices were carried out and worship according to the Law of Moses was followed faithfully. Scripture in Hebrews 9:1-9, tells us that in the temple, there was a veil, which separated the Holy of Holies, the earthly dwelling place of God’s presence, from the rest of the temple where the worshippers gathered.

This veiled separation, signified that man was separated from God by sin (Isa.59:1-2).  Consequently, only the high priest was allowed to pass beyond this veil once each year to enter into God's presence for all of Israel and make atonement for their sins (Exod.30:10; Lev.16; Heb.9:7).

In the gospel of Matthew 27:50-51a, it tells us what took place, as Jesus died on the cross: “Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.”  “And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom…”

Ultimately, the rending of the veil at the moment of Jesus' death, vividly symbolized that His sacrifice, the shedding of His own blood, was a sufficient atonement for sins. It also signified that now the way into the Holy of Holies was open for all people, for all time, both Jew and Gentile.

The torn veil was also symbolic of Christ Himself as the only way to the Father(John 14:6). This is indicated by the fact that the high priest had to enter the Holy of Holies through the veil. Now Christ is our superior High Priest, and as believers in His finished work on Calvary, we partake of His better priesthood and better covenant. Praise God, that we can now enter the Holy of Holies through Him. Scripture in Hebrews 10:19-20,says, “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh.”

The things of the temple were shadows of things to come, and they all ultimately point humanity to Jesus Christ. He was the veil to the Holy of Holies, and through His death the faithful now have free access to God.

Consequently, when Jesus died, and the veil was torn, God moved out of that place, never again to dwell in a temple made with hands (Acts 17:24). . God was through with that temple and its religious system, and the temple in Jerusalem were left “desolate,” and was eventually destroyed by the Romans in A.D. 70 (Luke 13:35).  As long as the temple stood in Jerusalem, it signified the continuation of the Old Covenant.  Nonetheless, Scripture in Hebrews 9:8-9, speaks of the age that was passing away, as the new covenant was being established (Heb.8:13).

The veil in the temple was a constant reminder that sin renders humanity unworthy for the presence of God. The countless sin offering, which was offered annually, as well as other sacrifices repeated daily, demonstrated that sin could not truly be atoned for or erased by mere animal sacrifices or any other human effort. Nevertheless, Jesus Christ, through His death, has removed the barrier, of the veil, which existed between God and man.  As a result, people from every kindred, tongue, and nation; whether Jew or Gentile, can approach Him with confidence and boldness (Heb.4:14-16).
